We all know that "build it and they will come“ is complete BS.
It's the same thing...
No one is going to read your stuff just because you decided to start writing. Write it and they will come is a myth. Just like build it and they will come is a myth.
People will only come and read your stuff because you write about the things they care about. Because you write about the stuff they're interested in. And not because you write stuff you're interested in.
People come and read your stuff because you're addressing problems they're currently facing. Because you're talking about their struggles and how to overcome them.
They don't come because you talk about what you want to talk about. They don't come because you write about what you want to write about.
The only reason they will ever come is because you write about what they want to read about. It doesn't work the other way round. Unless you're a celebrity. That's a different story.
And this is the single most important thing to understand when you're trying to build an audience. Especially on platforms like Medium with a built in audience.
You have to write the stuff your potential readers care about. And not what you care about.
The market decides what's going to be a success and what isn't.
You don't have to play by or try to understand the rules. As a matter of fact you can do whatever you want to and ignore everything I just said.
You can keep writing the stuff you care about and continue hoping that they will come. Maybe they will. But most probably they won't.
Look. There's really nothing wrong about writing about the things you care about. But if you do decide to do so, then you shouldn't be surprised if no one comes. If no one even cares.
So try to keep in mind that the market decides about what ends up on top and what doesn't. Always...
