There's never been a better time to be a creative. Still, most creatives complain about having to work too much and too hard. About being exploited. About competition. About this and that.
And it puzzles me every time I hear it.
If you're creative and you call yourself a creative, how come you're not creative about getting more work done in less time. About working less. About doing smarter work.
I know. Creativity is hard work. And it doesn't come just like that. It needs time. And patience. And is mostly an iterative process. It needs a hell lot of tweaking.
But still, creatives could be a lot more creative outside their field of expertise. Creative about sales. About marketing. About everything. Those are the things that matter these days. Those are the things that matter if you don't want to feel exploited.
I know it's scary. And it's a lot easier to work for someone else. And to do your thing. Over and over again.
But you know what. That someone else will always exploit you. Even if she doesn't exploit you, it will feel like it. Because you're not working on your own art, your're not working on your own dream.
Instead, you're basically working on making someone else's dream come true. And this will always feel like exploitation. At one point or the other. Sooner or later. Usually around midnight when you're still in the office.
That's why it's a necessity to learn all the other disciplines as well. Like sales (especially sales!), marketing and all that social media stuff out there. After all, you're the creative class. You're the ones who are able to create things. You're the future movers and shakers.
But if you're not willing to learn all these other disciplines all that's going to happen is that you'll constantly feel exploited. Exploited by someone who doesn't know how to create things. But who knows how to do all the other things.
Look. You have a huge competitive advantage. Most people don't know how to create things. The people you feel who are exploiting you don't know how to create things. I don't know how to create things either.
It's never been easier to create things and to sell things online. Sure, it needs time to figure it all out. Probably more than I'd like to admit. Still, the future is yours. If you're creative about it...
