The importance of doing

A degree is pretty much useless. Just like reading blog posts or books is pretty much useless.

It's all just information. Information that has to be confirmed (or adapted) by actions, by doing or by experiences, before it turns into real knowledge. Acquiring information is just the first step.

You know, no one is able to predict anything anymore. We live in a world that has gotten so complex. A world where everything is related to everything. And the only way to figure out anything is by doing. By testing. Adapting. And tweaking.

The world has gone crazy. Markets are totally unpredictable. Just like the global economy. Or customer behavior. Everything is unpredictable.

It's gotten so complex that the things we learn in theory or the things we read online are pretty much useless. In case they're not already outdated the moment we hear about them.

With the value of information decreasing every single day, the value of doing increases more and more every single day.

Everybody has access to information. But no one has access to knowledge. Because knowledge is the result of combining information with personal experiences. With doing.

And that's what most people are afraid of. The doing.

But doing, testing, failing and tweaking is the only predictable way to solve those complex problems and tasks we're facing these days.

Information and theories are just not enough anymore. Because there are no theories and there's no information out there that will be able to grasp the complexity and the unpredictability of the world we live in today.

We can't find the answers to those complex problems, questions and tasks anymore by simply acquiring as much information as we possibly can. Or by being analytical. That's just not enough anymore.

There are no one size fits all solutions anymore. There's just trial and error.

And that's what makes it so hard.

The fact that there are no recipes out there anymore, that there are no manuals out there anymore is what makes it so hard. Especially after we've been trained to follow the manual for our entire lives.
