I'm trapped.
I'm in a prison.
I'm trapped in a prison called freedom.
Hmmm...
How can one be trapped in freedom?
Here's the thing that no one told you before.
Freedom is a prison.
The more freedom you have, the less people will need you.
And the less people will need you, the less they'll depend on you.
And dependency means safety. At least for you.
The price of freedom is safety. And security.
When the company you work for needs you and depends on you it means this:
It means money to pay the bills.
It means money to feed the family.
It means money to buy whatever you want to buy.
Not having to worry about money is true freedom.
Everything else is just a lie.
Most of the freedom you read about online is a lie.
Most of the freedom digital nomads boast about is a lie.
The freedom I seem to be living is a lie.
It's all a big fat lie.
It's a big fat lie to take money out of your pockets.
It's an entire industry that wants to take money out of your pockets.
An industry that's based on the human need of freedom.
An industry that's based on selling you a dream.
A dream called freedom.
The rule is simple.
Everybody who's telling you how awesome it is to be free, to do whatever you want to, to follow your passion is basically lying to you.
At the end of the day, they all want to sell you a product.
Or a service.
Or a coaching session.
Or a ticket to an event.
Or whatever.
It doesn't matter.
But please don't be mad at those people. At me.
We're all just trapped in a prison called freedom.
A prison you're all trying to get access to.
So every time you read another freedom post, look closely.
Try to understand the real reason behind it.
Try to look at what's behind the mirror.
You're already free.
When someone depends on you, you're free.
When someone needs you, you're free.
So instead of trying to become free by quitting your job, by trying to be like all those people you see and read about online, try to become irreplaceable at your current job.
Try to add as much value as possible so that no one will ever think about firing you.
Try to become a linchpin like Seth Godin calls it.
Become that beacon that shines so bright that you'll be the light for everybody else who can't see in the dark..
That's the first step to real freedom. That's the basis for everything else to come. Whatever that might be in your case..
