Self help books are lying to you. I am lying to you. The entire world is lying to you. Everything you read about following your passion is complete BS. You won't be able to pay your bills by just following your passion. That simply doesn't work.
It might take years and years until you might be able to pay your bills by following your passion.
Every blog, book, magazine or person telling you that you can live a happy and fulfilled life with no worries at all is lying to you. They are in the business of selling you dreams. I'm in the business of selling you dreams. That's how we make money.
We make money by telling you that all of this is possible. That you can live your dream. That you might one day be able to live your dream, be happy, feed your family, buy a house and become free. Every second you spend reading this stuff people make money.
So stop reading this stuff! Stop reading my blog. Seriously, you need to stop it right now. Go for a walk instead. Enjoy nature. Call your parents. Go for a run.
As a matter of fact, the more you buy into this crap and the more time you spend on people's blogs or read their books (just like my stuff) the less likely it is that you're ever going to live your dream.
It will actually pull you away from living the life you care about. Your dream life.
Instead it puts more and more money in people's pockets. Into the pockets of the people that are trying to sell you dreams. That's their business model. That's my business model.
It only hurts you and your dreams. It takes away your time, energy and focus. It takes away your focus from planting your seeds. If you don't plant your seeds you will never ever be able to live your dream and create your own freedom.
Instead you just became a dreamer, an admirer, a passive participant of this entire dance. You become the person watching everybody else dance. You're stuck at watching other people planting their seeds.
You need to stop this. Stop wasting your time and become a dancer instead. Join the dance. Plant your seeds. Watch them grow. Fall in love. Break up. Fall into a deep hole. And then get back up again. Love this life.
I actually decided to write this piece because a lot of people asked me how they can find their passion, if they should follow their passion and quit their jobs, how to plant their seeds and so on. And there's only one true answer to this question.
You need to get a regular job that pays as much money as possible.
And then you have to save as much as possible. Live on a shoestring. Don't be a mindless consumer. But reward yourself for achievements. Don't cut the stuff you know that's truly good for you. That makes you happy.
Simply stop buying stuff you don't need. The stuff you know you'll be upset about having bought the moment you come home.
As a matter of fact the only way I'm able to do what I'm doing right now is because I did exactly this.
I worked a corporate job where I got good money, an apartment and so on.
I saved about 70%+ of my income during a period of 18 months.
Did I have to live a miserable life? No, not at all. I just stopped being a mindless consumer. And once I had enough money on the bank I quit.
I'm not saying that you have to save 70%+ of your income. That would be insane. I'm insane. Really...
Save what's possible. Stop going to restaurants. Stop going out on the weekends. Stop telling yourself that you deserve all of this stuff as some sort of a compensation for doing things during the week that you hate.
This will only reinforce the entire process. And you might sink deeper and deeper into the dark hole. Into the trap.
I quit my job because my savings made me a free man. I was able to buy myself freedom. I bought myself time to invest in myself. I bought myself time to try to unleash my potential.
I know, if you read this you probably don't feel like doing all of this. You're looking for another answer. But this is the only answer I have for you. There might be other answers, but that's the only one that worked for me.
Will it work for you? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not.
Having saved a comfortable amount of money buys you piece of mind. Piece of mind you will so desperately need if you don't want to go crazy because of all the pressure. Of all the negative things that will happen to you.
As a matter of fact, every website that tells you to quit university, quit your job or start a freedom business or whatever kind of BS is lying to you. Trust me I'm also lying to you right now.
Don't buy into this BS. Don't buy into my BS. Live your own life. Find out what works for you and what doesn't. Don't be the reader. Be the writer. Don't be the follower. Be the leader.
But most importantly don't listen to my advice.
If you quit university and you don't have a degree you will probably never be able to get a decent job that allows you to save some money. Same with quitting your job. Saving money while trying to figure out a way of making money just doesn't work.
If you think your funds will last one year, they'll probably only last three months. If you think you're going to start making money during your first months, you're probably going to start making money in twelve months. Or maybe in two years. Or three.
Everything you believe in right now is probably completely wrong.
I want you to remember one thing that created my freedom and saved my ass over and over again.
“I had saved enough money before I did anything stupid”.
So if you're about to graduate or are an employee thinking about what you should do next and you don't know what to do in your life, do the following:
Go and get a job that pays as much money as possible, save as much money as possible, start planting your seeds and once you saved enough money or one seed grew into a strong enough tree go ahead and buy yourself some freedom.
Freedom to invest in yourself. Freedom to continue planting your seeds. Freedom to reap the benefits of your seeds. That is the only way. The way that works for everybody.
And when I say everybody what I really mean is me...
Yann Girard: "The only way to strive in the 21st century is to create multiple streams of income..." I haven't had a real job in 5 years. I've built dozens of websites, online shops, wrote more than 10 books, created dozens of online courses and invested in tons of different things. Most things didn't work out. But some did. And I've now put together a report with some of THE most important ways of making money online in the 21st century (without having to quit your day job). And you can get it for free today! All you'd have to do is to CLICK HERE to download the report now, (it's free, for now) |
