My entire life I only bet on one single horse. The one horse everybody told me I should be betting on. The horse everybody else was betting on. The horse society wanted me to bet on.
I put all my money on institutionalized education. I went all in with the exact same hand for almost twenty years of my life.
I went to school for almost thirteen years, then I went to university for another six years. I actually did exactly the opposite of what I learned in my finance classes. I didn't spread my risk at all.
Another thing that I didn't really get at that time was the causality between doing something everybody else was doing and living a mediocre life.
If you always do what everybody else is doing you might end up living a quite comfortable life. But will it be a fulfilled and happy life? I don't know. It clearly wasn't for me.
So I started planting my seeds.
I started planting my seeds while I was still at university. Most of the seeds never really grew into a beautiful flower. But I kept on planting seeds. And I'm still planting seeds while you read this.
Planting your seeds doesn't necessarily mean that you quit your job and become an entrepreneur. No, that's not at all what this is all about. It's about spreading your risk and creating opportunities for yourself and the people around you.
Planting your seeds can come in all different colors and shapes. Here are a few things you can do to start planting your seeds today:
Connect two people who you think might get along and see the magic happen.
Read at least one chapter of Choose Yourself by James Altucher
Help someone out that will clearly never be able to pay you anything back.
Start writing down your thoughts on a piece of paper or notepad.
Launch a side project and work on it for an hour a day.
Read all sorts of books. And especially read books about death (like this one).
Start creating things (a painting, a poem, an article, DIY stuff, etc.).
Try to give a small present to someone you care about.
When you're caught up in the loop, go for a walk.
If you're really hardcore: sell your smart phone and get a cheap prepaid one.
That's the stuff I'm trying to do every day. Needless to say that I constantly fail at doing so.
And I will also guarantee you that none of this will work. At least not in the short term. It's really all about planting your seeds, spreading your risk and creating opportunities. These opportunities might take a long time until they flourish and become a tree.
So you'd better start sooner than later...
Most of these seeds might never turn into a tree. But maybe one day, one of these things might develop into a big enough tree. A tree that will offer hundreds or thousands of people a shelter. A place to live. A place to relax. A place to rejuvenate.
And maybe one day one of these seeds might make you a free man. It might help you to break free. To create your own freedom. And other people's freedom...
